The motor runs, the door stays where it is
If the motor clearly runs — you can hear it working — but the door does not move at all, the opener has almost certainly become disconnected from the door rather than broken.
This is worth ten minutes of your own time. It is one of the most common paid call-outs in the trade, and one of the most commonly unnecessary.
The emergency release is the usual culprit
Every automatic opener has a red cord hanging from the rail. Pulling it disconnects the trolley from the door so the door can be operated by hand during a power cut.
Once pulled, the motor runs the trolley up and down the rail with nothing attached. Everything sounds exactly right and nothing happens.
To re-engage on most units: pull the red cord back toward the door (or, on some models, toward the motor) until the trolley lever clicks into its running position, then run the opener through one full cycle. The trolley will travel until it snaps back onto the carriage.
If the trolley is engaged and it still does nothing
Look at the drive itself. On a chain drive, a chain that has jumped its sprocket or gone visibly slack will slip under load. On a belt drive, check the belt is intact and tensioned.
A grinding noise with no movement on an older chain-drive unit usually means the plastic drive gear has stripped. That is a genuine repair, though often a cheaper one than a whole opener.
