Why this exists

Almost nobody in this trade publishes a price. That vagueness is where the margin lives, and it is why a homeowner has no way of telling an ordinary quote from an outrageous one until long afterwards.

The Better Business Bureau, the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection and the Federal Trade Commission have all published on the same pattern in this trade: a low advertised call-out, then a much larger number once someone is standing in your garage.

We are not a contractor, so we have no price to protect. That puts us in the odd position of being able to publish what the work costs and let people check their own.

Building the real numbers

Every check adds an anonymous figure to a growing record of what garage door work actually costs in Queens. Once there are enough reports for a median to mean something, we will publish it — and say how many reports it rests on, because a median over four is noise.

Does being above the range mean I was ripped off?
Not on its own. Difficult access, a non-standard or unusually heavy door, seized hardware, emergency call-out rates, and a second fault found once the door is open all legitimately push a price up. What a large gap does mean is that it is worth asking exactly what you paid for.
Where do the ranges come from?
Published cost guides, each named and dated on the result. Angi, This Old House, Bob Vila, Fixr and Homewyse, with New York specific figures preferred where they exist. You can click through to every source.
What do you do with what I enter?
